Hailey Bieber on Social Media and Self-Care

Hailey Bieber uses Instagram to share snippets of her life, career, and chic fashion sense with the almost 17 million people who follow her, but the model is also clear about the fact that she sometimes needs to draw a line between social media and real life. In a new interview with BuzzFeed for her bareMinerals partnership, Hailey opened up about the ways unplugging from her phone ultimately benefits her mental health.

"I think something that people have to remember is there's some sort of freedom people feel behind a computer screen. They think that they can just have this alternate persona and just bully people and make themselves feel better, to people that they don't even know," she told BuzzFeed. "It just makes you start to second guess so many things if you really feed into it. It just does something to your soul, I think, if you pay too close attention to it."

It's not the first time the model has spoken out about the ways online negativity can have serious consequences. In December, she posted a series of Instagram stories that addressed how mean messages can hurt anyone, no matter how famous or influential the person on the receiving end of those comments may be. To rise above the criticism, Hailey told BuzzFeed that she chooses to delete Instagram from her phone for days at a time. Even though not being able to check what's trending or what people are posting all the time can cause a bit of FOMO, Hailey pointed out that you're really doing yourself a favor in the long-run.

"I think it's bad for your health — the constant need to be picking your phone up and refreshing your feed just to see what it is that's going on or what you're missing," she explained. "You're not really missing anything because one way or another you'll find things out in the world."

So true! And since we really only see a filtered reality of people's lives on our feed, it can sometimes lead us to compare ourselves with others online. Hailey's no stranger to this feeling, especially in the world of fashion, but that's why she values her individuality above everything else. "I think a lot of girls struggle with feeling like they can't bring something to the table, but they forget that you — just yourself — is bringing something to the table because there isn't another you," she added.

BRB, ready to delete Instagram and spend some one-on-one time with my favorite person: me!
